University of Manitoba Campus Conservatives' Statement on the Passing of The Honourable Duff Roblin

The University of Manitoba Campus Conservatives wish to express regret over the passing of the Honourable Dufferin “Duff” Roblin, P.C., C.C., O.M. at the age of 92.

Mr. Roblin led a long and full life that was dedicated to public service. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force overseas during the Second World War. Upon returning from duty, Mr. Roblin became a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1949. Upon assuming leadership of the Progressive Conservatives, Mr. Roblin led them to victory and became Premier in 1958 and served in that capacity until 1967, when he ran for the leadership of the federal Conservatives, and placed second.

Duff Roblin’s record as Premier in the province of Manitoba remains unmatched by any one in the position, prior to him or afterward. While his legacy will be inextricably linked with the building of the Red River Floodway in the face of staunch opposition, Mr. Roblin’s achievements as premier reach well beyond what is known as “Duff’s Ditch.” Mr. Roblin implemented many exciting and bold new initiatives that modernized Manitoba with respect to healthcare, hydro, roads, and education, including significant funding increases and upgrades to the University of Manitoba, where he was once enrolled as a student.

After his tenure as Premier, Duff Roblin was appointed to the Senate and served the people of Manitoba as a Senator for a further 14 years. For part of this time he served as Leader of the Government in the Senate, and thus a Cabinet Minister, under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. After reaching the retirement age of 75, he led a quiet life away from the spotlight, but stayed informed of the current political climate. In 2008 he was named as “The Greatest Manitoban,” and has been called “The Greatest Prime Minister Canada Never Had.”

It is a testament to Duff Roblin that he proved to be an inspiration for so many generations of Manitobans. From those who lived and voted for his administration 50 years ago, to current PC Manitoba Leader Hugh McFadyen, and even young members of the UMCC, Duff Roblin was a political idol to many and respected by all who knew him.

Mr. Roblin was a tremendous leader, premier, visionary and statesman who provided a strong voice for Manitoba and Canada. As we reflect upon his lifetime of service and achievement, the Executive extends condolences to his family and friends on behalf of all members of the UMCC. Duff Roblin’s presence and wisdom will be severely missed.
